Roppongi is one of Tokyo's most popular downtown areas. With many foreign embassies, companies, and residences of Westerners, Roppongi is also one of the most populated areas in Japan.


The ward is home to 85 embassies, more than half of the 155 embassies in Japan, as well as foreign-affiliated companies and television stations, making it a hub of international economic activity and information dissemination.


The reason why the number of foreigners has increased in Roppongi seems to be that after the war and during the Meiji era (1868-1912), a large area of land was secured for the army and an American military camp was established nearby. Since then, Roppongi has been an army town.


The land that had been a Japanese army town was transformed into an American military town after the war.


Restaurants and nightclubs catering to foreigners increased, and Roppongi became famous as a place where Japanese entertainers, young people known as "Roppongi Zoku," and other playful people gathered along with foreigners.


And the high concentration of embassies in the area may be one of the reasons why it is such a convenient place to live. There seem to be many apartments rented by companies (for use by foreigners). Foreigners who come to Japan on company assignments want to live in a town where it is easy for multinationals to live so that their families do not have to deal with the unfamiliarity of Japan.
