Differences between Japanese and Asians ①

BLOG

The number of foreigners visiting Japan continues to increase. The majority of them are of Chinese and Korean descent. Can you guess which country they are from just by their appearance? In this issue, we will give you a hint on how to tell them apart. I will also tell you their characteristics.

This is our own point of view, so please read it as if it were an image! Let's get started!

The Philippines
The Philippines, with approximately 7,641 islands, is a predominantly Malay nation. The Philippines has been subjected to colonial rule by other countries for a long period of time. In particular, the period of Spanish rule was over 300 years long, after which the country gained independence after being ruled by the United States. As a result, there are still a certain number of half- and quarter-century Filipinos of European and American descent, and the country's customs, language, and other aspects are strongly influenced by the colonial rule.

The Philippines is a country with a mixture of DNA and cultures from various countries.

The eyes are large and striking, and the bridge of the nose is smooth. Unlike the Japanese, who have flat faces and small facial parts, Filipinos of Asian descent have well-developed, sculpted faces with well-defined eyes and noses.

Filipinos have wheat-colored skin by nature. This gives them a healthy image that is attractive under the sun.

Their cheerful, friendly, and communicative personalities are one of the characteristics of Filipinos. This is probably because they are accustomed to smooth communication regardless of whether they are native speakers or foreigners, since the official language is English and the ethnic groups in the country are diverse.

They are also famous for their high level of hospitality. In Japan, the number of Filipinos working in the nursing care and hospitality industries is increasing. The spirit of hospitality can be transmitted beyond language barriers.

The cheerful and open-minded nature that is common in warm climates is probably one of the most attractive aspects of Filipinos.

Korea
Respect for hierarchical relationships and family-centeredness
In Korean society, respect for family and elders is highly valued. Confucianism has a strong influence, and respect and obedience are important. Courtesy and respect are expected to be shown according to one's role and status in the family and society. In addition, family-centered culture is strong, and family ties and mutual support are emphasized.

Straightforward Communication
Koreans generally like to communicate clearly. They tend to express their feelings and opinions frankly, without hiding them. This is based on the concept of “like what you like and dislike what you dislike. For example, if they find a meal tasteless, they may state this without hesitation. This style of communication emphasizes emotional honesty and intuition.

Academic-educated society and career orientation
Korea is known as an academic society, where education and work experience are directly related to social status and success. As a result, Koreans are highly dedicated to their studies and careers, and seek self-fulfillment in a highly competitive environment. Through high educational standards and hard work, they strive to maximize their individual abilities.

Passionate personalitie
Koreans tend to be passionate about everything they do. This enthusiasm is especially evident in sports and academics. Having grown up in a highly competitive environment, they have a strong drive to succeed and work hard. This passion drives them to take strong action to achieve their individual goals and contribute to society.

Attention to appearance and sense of beauty
Koreans tend to have a very high awareness of appearance and appearance-consciousness. It is believed that beauty and cleanliness are directly related to social reputation and self-worth, and many people spend time and money on beauty and fashion. Plastic surgery is also common in Korea, and many people seek to improve their appearance.

In terms of appearance, men and women of all ages love the “mountain climbing look. Windbreakers, backpacks, and baseball caps are the standard.

Many aunts wear “sun visors” and have “punch perms” on both sunny and cloudy days. Older ladies also seem to love baseball caps, and many of them have “beautiful straight hair + baseball cap”. And they all wear the same “orchang makeup (meaning makeup like ‘orchang,’ which means beautiful girl in Korean). Both men and women are very careful about whitening their skin.

China
Speak your mind clearly
China is a society where various cultures and ethnic groups coexist in a vast land.

Chinese people living there have different cultures and customs depending on where they were born, and there is no common sense among them.

Therefore, it is necessary to clearly communicate how you think, and this leads to a tendency to be assertive.

It is important to understand that this is not a negative behavior, but rather a way of communicating one's thoughts in order to communicate.

Valuing family and friends
A common philosophy among the Chinese is that so many of them act for the sake of their family and friends.

In terms of family, there is a connection, such as taking care of children in multiple generations.

As for associates, it takes time to build trust, but once trust is established, they are dedicated and supportive, even at the cost of self.

Focus on Profit
The speed at which IT is spreading in China is remarkable. The mindset of immediately adopting anything that is convenient is not limited to young and old.

For example, smartphones are used as a communication tool, but some older people in Japan shy away from them because of the difficulty of operating them,

In China, however, this does not seem to be an option.

And everyone is very loud and energetic, no matter where they are.

Sneakers by Adidas, Nike, and other brands are popular in Japan. Primary-colored clothes such as “bright red” or “bright yellow” used to be in fashion, but sober (“cool”, let's say) clothes have become more noticeable recently. Many seem to be wearing their hair tied up in a single style.

There is a sharp difference between fashion-conscious young people and older people who are (or seem to be) indifferent to fashion. As in Korea, there is a great obsession with whitening. Some of them abhor the sun. Many have super black hair and eye color. The Chinese look great in their bright red “qipao” Chinese dresses.

We often hear people say, “How can foreigners tell the difference between Asians and Asians? We often hear foreigners say, “can't tell the difference between Asians and non-asians!

Please use this as a reference for your own judging criteria.

Please look forward to next week's topic!
