Differences between Japanese and Americans (to read the air or not) ②

BLOG

Hello everyone!

Starting today, we are actually going to talk about the differences in communication that we all think we have.

We will be bringing you another series of articles on this topic.

There are many differences between Japanese and foreigners, but it is said that the biggest difference lies in “reading the air or not.

We believe this is where the resistance between Japanese and Americans prevents them from doing business smoothly.

Understanding this difference will help smooth business between the U.S. and Japan.

Let's take a look.

■What is Context?
One of the differences in communication styles is the difference in context. Context refers to context, contextualization, situation, background, and back-and-forth.

Low context means that there is little commonality of context. In other words, it is an environment where there is relatively little tacit understanding between the speaker and listener because there is little commonality of situation and background.

High context, conversely, is an environment where there is relatively more tacit understanding between speaker and listener.

A mono-ethnic nation is high context because it shares more common backgrounds, while a multi-ethnic nation is low context because it shares few common backgrounds.

■The United States is the most low-context country in the world.
The world can be divided into three major categories,

■ Anglo-Saxon language counties.
America, Holland, Australia, Canada, Germany, Finland, Denmark, England...

Romance languages
Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Mexican, Argentine, Brazilian

Asian Languages

Saudi Arabia, Iran, India, Indonesia, China, Korea, Japan
Of these three, the most low-context language county is the Anglo-Saxon language county. The most high context country in the Anglo-Saxon language county is the relatively monolingual England, and the most low context country is the United States. After the U.S., Australia and Canada follow.

I see, and I wonder if many of you are wondering.

It is interesting to learn about these cultural differences.

Stay tuned next week for more interesting continuing topics!
