Starting today, I'd like to talk about the differences in communication that we all actually think about.

We will be bringing you another series of articles on this topic.


There are many differences between Japanese and foreigners, but it is said that the biggest difference lies in “reading the air" or not.

We believe that this is where the resistance lies that prevents Japanese and Americans from doing business smoothly.

Understanding this difference will help smooth business between the U.S. and Japan.

For example, when Japanese people visit the U.S. for the first time, the place where they feel uncomfortable with Americans is immigration at the airport.

Even though there is a long line, the immigration inspectors do not seem to be in a hurry and are slowly screening while chatting. They work at their own pace without feeling any irritation from the Japanese people in line.

Looking at the immigration inspectors from the Japanese side of the line, I wish they would read the atmosphere and work more efficiently.

From the American point of view, the view is that there are more serious workers in Protestant America than in Europe. As evidence of this, the U.S. has developed its economy by a wide margin compared to Europe.

In terms of working diligently, Japanese and Americans are similar, but in terms of reading the air, Japanese and Americans are said to be the most distant from each other.


You see...I wonder if there are many people who think so.
