It's not just too hot! Overseas reactions to Japan's crazy summer③

BLOG

Hello!

Isn't it too hot in Japan in the summer?

We wonder how people overseas react to this... Let's take a look!

Sun umbrellas and hats rather than sunglasses
Even though the sun is strong in summer, you hardly ever see people wearing sunglasses in Japan. In fact, more people use sun umbrellas than sunglasses. I feel like there is even a perception that sunglasses are for celebrities and people who care about fashion.

In Europe and America, for example, people tend to wear sunglasses whenever the sun is strong. Perhaps because many people think it’s odd to carry an umbrella when it’s not raining, I’ve never seen Europeans or Americans using sun umbrellas.

However, in recent years, I’ve started seeing Asian people, both men and women, using sun umbrellas in Dubai. Thinking about it, sun umbrellas are more effective at protecting the entire body from the sun, so they make sense as a sun protection measure.

Flexibility is key to enjoying a comfortable summer
Overall, I think spending the summer in Japan (especially Tokyo) is brutal. It's hot, but there aren't many places with strong air conditioning, and taking a taxi to escape the heat is expensive.

The countermeasures against the increasingly intense heat are modest, like sun umbrellas, fans, and electric fans—things used in less hot times. These are typical Japanese countermeasures, but whether they are effective against the recent abnormal heat is questionable.

Additionally, most companies maintain their regular working hours even in summer. Commuting on crowded trains in the heat and arriving at work as temperatures begin to rise is quite challenging. Some countries have adopted daylight saving time. There are more comfortable summers elsewhere in the world. Summer is not just about extreme heat and hardship.

If there were flexible rules, such as allowing people to work from home when it's too hot or letting students go home early, summer life would be much more comfortable.

It's inevitable that it's hot.

However, stubbornly continuing with the same routines as other seasons only makes it more difficult.

What do you think?

Thank you to everyone who still loves Japan despite the unbearable heat!

Let's make sure to take proper heat precautions!
