It's not just too hot! Overseas reactions to Japan's crazy summer
If asked which is hotter, the Middle East or Japan, most people would probably answer the Middle East.
Looking at temperatures alone, Kuwait, known as the “Death Valley of the Middle East,” frequently reaches nearly 50 degrees Celsius during the day. In Dubai, temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius are not uncommon from July to August. At such temperatures, walking on the streets for even 20 minutes can be life-threatening. This is no joke.
Even though I live in Dubai, where temperatures regularly exceed 40 degrees Celsius, I personally feel that Japanese summers are more intense.
Here, we will discuss the intensity of Japanese summers as perceived by foreigners and how Japanese summers are perceived from abroad.
Is Japan hotter than the Middle East or Southeast Asia?
What’s important here isn’t just the temperature, but how hot it feels. Japan’s summer temperatures are around 30–35°C, which is surprisingly low compared to the Middle East, where temperatures regularly exceed 40°C.
However, we mustn’t forget about humidity.
The Middle East has a dry climate, so even though temperatures are high, it doesn’t feel that uncomfortable. On the other hand, Japan has lower temperatures but higher humidity. This combination of humidity creates the sticky, oppressive feel of Japanese summers.
When comparing the discomfort index in August across major cities, Tokyo stands out as the clear leader.
What do you think?
Even though the heat is unbearable, I’m grateful to everyone who still loves Japan!
Let’s make sure to take proper heat precautions!
