Hello everyone!
Starting today, we will take a closer look at “inbound” and “outbound,” which you may not be familiar with.
Many people may think they know the actual meaning, but in reality, they may not.
We think many people recognize these terms as words used in the tourism industry. However, they are used in various other contexts besides tourism, and their meanings differ depending on the context.
In this article, We will explain the differences in the meanings of inbound and outbound in different industries and the challenges of inbound tourism in the tourism industry.
The meanings of inbound and outbound
Inbound is used to mean “coming in from the outside.” Many people are familiar with the term in the context of travel, such as inbound consumption. On the other hand, outbound means “going out from the inside” and is the antonym of inbound. These two terms have slightly different meanings depending on the context, so it is important to understand how they are used in each industry.
Differences in the meaning of inbound and outbound by industry
Since the meanings vary slightly by industry, let's examine them by industry.
Tourism industry
In the tourism industry, “inbound” refers to inbound travel and inbound foreign visitors. On the other hand, “outbound” refers to travel from Japan to overseas and Japanese overseas travelers. Inbound has gained attention since the 2000s as it has been promoted by the Japanese government. The consumption activities of foreign tourists in Japan are referred to as “inbound consumption,” and the business market is called the “inbound market,” terms that are frequently used.
Call Center Industry
In the call center industry, “inbound” and ‘outbound’ are also used. “Inbound” refers to a company receiving inquiries from customers and responding to their questions or concerns. Examples of call content include “inquiries about products or services” and “applications.” On the other hand, outbound refers to approaches made by companies to customers or potential customers for the purpose of after-sales follow-up or product sales.
Marketing Industry
In the marketing industry, inbound refers to a marketing method that involves providing useful information through websites, blogs, and social media to attract potential customers, nurture them, and convert them into actual customers.
On the other hand, outbound marketing in the marketing industry refers to a marketing strategy where companies unilaterally deliver information to consumers or target audiences. This is similar to traditional mass media, such as TV or radio commercials, where information is unilaterally disseminated through media channels.
