What are foreign business owners?①

BLOG

Hello、 everyone!

Did you know that the number of foreign business owners in Japan has been increasing recently?

If you're interested but unsure about the actual situation, please read on!

Due to the acceleration of globalization in recent years, the number of foreign workers in Japan has been steadily increasing. You may have noticed foreign employees working at convenience stores, restaurants, and other familiar places. In particular, the number of foreign workers who are business owners has been growing in recent years. In this article, we will provide a detailed explanation of the types of foreign business owners and their current situation.

Foreigners who take on the role of managing a company
First, foreign business owners are foreigners who take on the role of managing a company. In today's globalized world, it is not uncommon for the managers of companies in Japan to be non-Japanese. Regardless of the size of the company, a manager is needed to steer the organization. Since the company's performance can be significantly affected by the manager's decisions, the responsibility is extremely important. Managers may be referred to as president, representative director, CEO, or employer, depending on their role.

Types of foreign business owners: Starting a business in Japan
Foreign business executives working in Japan can be broadly divided into two categories. The first category consists of foreigners who have come to Japan and started their own businesses, becoming business executives. However, not everyone can start a business. To start a business and become a business executive in Japan, you need a specific residence status. Specifically, this includes permanent resident, long-term resident, spouse of a Japanese national, and business management residence statuses. While the barriers to starting a business in Japan are not low, the number of foreigners starting businesses has been increasing in recent years, particularly in major urban areas.

Becoming a business executive at a Japanese company
The second type involves becoming a business owner while working for a Japanese company. There are two patterns within this category. The first involves someone who has been working for a Japanese company and has been promoted to become a business owner. The second involves hiring foreigners as business talent from the start. In recent years, the latter case has become more common, with even well-known Japanese companies increasingly hiring foreign business owners. In such cases, foreign executives tend to receive higher compensation than Japanese executives, but due to the emphasis on prior experience and achievements, the number of foreign executives who actually attain such positions remains limited.
