Ranking of the most popular industries for foreign entrepreneurship①

BLOG

Hello everyone!

Spring has come and it's time to look for a job.

We would like to introduce you to some employment opportunities that may be of interest to you.

Top 5 most popular jobs for foreigners working in Japan
Here is a ranking of the most popular occupations for foreigners working in Japan.

Engineering (20%)
Technical jobs are the most popular among foreigners working in Japan.

The word ‘technical’ covers a wide range of occupations, but when considered in conjunction with the previous item ‘dissatisfaction of foreigners working in Japan’, the reason for their popularity is probably that their skills are easily reflected directly in their income.

It is also an occupation where language skills are relatively unquestionable, as long as one has the ability to do the job.

Teachers (19%)
The second most popular occupation among foreigners working in Japan is teaching.

This is thought to be mainly foreign language teachers who teach their own mother tongue.

This is an occupation where language skills, which tend to be a bottleneck when working in Japan, can be used as a weapon.

This occupation is also often chosen by foreigners with a status of residence that allows them to work without a work visa, such as the spouse of a Japanese national, a foreign student or a family visitor.

Engineers (16%)
Engineers are a technical profession in the broadest sense of the term, but are so popular that they account for 16% of the independent workforce.

The high demand for the profession means that there are a large number of jobs available, and the language proficiency hurdle is low, making it an occupation with a high proportion of foreigners overall.

Many major companies, such as Rakuten and Mercari, are actively recruiting foreign engineers.

Sales jobs (16%)
Fourth place goes to sales jobs.

Foreign employees who know the culture and etiquette of the country well and are fluent in the language play an active role in sales to overseas customers.

In addition, having foreigners working in sales positions, which are often the face of the company, can give the impression of a global company externally.

Receptionist (15%)
Fifth place went to receptionists.

Reception is often associated with company reception, but in the original survey taken in English, the term ‘Reception’ was used, which also includes hotel reception staff.

The tourism industry, which often deals with foreign tourists, is another industry in which foreign workers are active.

Other popular occupations include!

Other popular occupations include interpreting/translation (3%) and design/art (2%).

The low popularity of interpreting/translating, which makes use of language skills, is a bit surprising!
